MCP Server for Asana Task Management

Challenge

Task and project context was scattered across Asana workspaces, requiring teams to jump between views to track dependencies, statuses, and assignments. There was no safe way to give AI assistants access to Asana without risking accidental changes to active projects.

Solution

84EM extended an existing open-source integration with a read-only safety mode and comprehensive tool coverage across the full Asana platform. Teams can now query tasks, track project status, and manage dependencies through conversation, with the confidence that read-only mode prevents unintended modifications.

Technical Implementation

  • Read-only safety mode that disables all write operations with a single environment variable, protecting production workspaces.
  • 33 tools covering tasks, projects, statuses, tags, dependencies, and workspace operations.
  • Intelligent prompts for task summaries, completeness analysis, and guided task creation that reduce context-switching.
  • Full dependency tracking so teams can map task relationships and identify blockers through conversation.
  • Project status management for creating, reviewing, and tracking status updates across workspaces.
  • Tag-based organization with full create, assign, and filter capabilities for structured task management.

Results

Teams can navigate their entire Asana workspace through AI assistants with read-only mode providing a safety net for production environments. The project shipped as open-source under the MIT license, extending community work and free for any team on Asana to adopt.
